Generating shapes- workshop 2

How do you make a beautiful shape? Start drawing shapes! and the more you draw, the more you will learn about the variations and soon one will be more interesting and beautiful to you than another.

Zach Holmes, Fall 2019, Design I, TC3

How do you generate multiple variations of a shape? I started with a shape that had a circle and a stem and by changing these two elements in size, length, and direction I was able to make a lot more family members. These are paper cutouts, but of course, you could draw or paint the variations too.

shape variations

one shape + the same shape = a new shape

Plus
one shape + another shape = a third shape

Minus
One shape subtracted from another shape

one shape repeated with value added in graphite

This is a very random arrangement. What would happen if the shapes were put in rows or in a
circular arrangement?

Another shape variation can be generated by enlarging or reducing the size of the original shape. Here I have cut out 4 sizes. You can then repeat the different sizes and overlap the shapes to create space.
